1. Is your microphone connected properly?

  • For external microphones:
    • Ensure the microphone is properly plugged into your computer.
    • If it’s a USB microphone, try using a different USB port.
  • For wireless headsets:
    • Make sure the headset is powered on and connected via Bluetooth or its wireless receiver.
  • Built-in microphone:
    • Ensure that it hasn’t been muted using a physical button on the laptop or headset.

2. Is your microphone selected in Microsoft Teams?

  • Check your microphone settings in Teams:
    1. During a call, click the More options (three dots) in the meeting controls.
    2. Select Settings > Devices.
    3. Under Microphone, ensure the correct microphone is selected from the dropdown menu.

3. Have you accidentally muted your microphone?

  • Check if the microphone icon in the Teams meeting is crossed out. If it is, click it to unmute.
  • Also check if your microphone has a physical mute button (some headsets or laptops do), and ensure it’s not muted.

4. Are microphone permissions enabled?

  • On Windows:
    1. Go to Start > Settings > Privacy > Microphone.
    2. Ensure that Microphone access for this device is turned on.
    3. Scroll down to ensure Allow desktop apps to access your microphone is turned on and that Teams is listed.
  • On Mac:
    1. Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Microphone.
    2. Ensure that Microsoft Teams has permission to access the microphone.

5. Is another application using the microphone?

  • Sometimes another app might be using your microphone, preventing Teams from accessing it.
  • Close any other applications that might be using the microphone (e.g., Zoom, Skype, etc.).

6. Have you checked the volume?

  • On Windows:
    1. Right-click the Speaker icon in the taskbar and select Open Sound settings.
    2. Under Input, make sure your microphone is selected and the volume level is high enough.
  • On Mac:
    1. Go to System Preferences > Sound > Input.
    2. Select your microphone and check the input volume level.

7. Try restarting Teams or your computer:

  • Close and restart the Teams app to see if it resolves the issue.
  • If that doesn’t work, restart your computer and try again.

8. Check for driver updates:

  • On Windows:
    1. Go to Start > Device Manager.
    2. Expand the Sound, video, and game controllers section.
    3. Right-click your microphone and select Update driver.
  • On Mac:
    • Ensure macOS is up to date by going to System Preferences > Software Update.
